Biography
After finishing an economics degree at the University of Colorado, Rick Barnett moved first to Pennsylvania and then shortly thereafter to Washington DC. Looking to replace downhill skiing he was used to in Colorado, he found bicycle racing through commuting and then NCVC Rock Creek race series. He won his first race in the Rock Creek "C" class in 1974, and his next four races in 1975. By the 1976 season he was a member of the NCVC elite team that included Ian Jackson,Paul Pearson, Joe Saunders, and Ed Slaughter.

In 1977  he was a member of the four-man NCVC team that raced the Red Zinger stage race in Colorado.  Always a strong time-trialer, he finished 10th in the final TT of the stage race.  Later that year, one day after placing sixth in the National Championship time trial, he won the 1977 qualifier for the World Championship Team Time Trial. The four-man team, which included Tom Doughty and Kent Bostick rode 50 miles in 1:48. He described  the event as 'the hardest race" he had ever done. Unfortunately, the ABLA decided not to send a team that year.

After a long hiatus from racing, he returned to active competition in the early 90s, when he won several masters district criterium championships, before leaving with other NCVC masters racers for DC Velo.
