Federation of Washington Area Cycle Clubs

The Federation of Washington Area Cycle Clubs

The Federation of Washington Area Cycle clubs was founded in 1960, partly through the efforts of Ray Matthews, Jr , who was president until 1966. The association was a "club of clubs" that published a monthly newsletter, The Spokesman and promoted the National Capital Open from 1963 until 1969.  Some of the member clubs still exist today.
  • formed in 1960
  • Published The Spokesman from 1961 to about 1970
  • renamed "Federation of Washington Area Bicycle Clubs' in 1966 (no reason given)
  • by 1972 The Spokesman was an advocacy newsletter for bicycle paths, and did not contain any racing information.
